Surface stations in yellow in WDQMS

Surface stations in yellow in WDQMS

Hello,

On metropolitan France, WDQMS shows several stations in yellow (that means: data received but no correspondance in OSCAR) for ECMWF, and as for us, theses stations are not supposed to send messages abroad. I'd wish to ask how ECMWF gets these data.

Thank you,

Best regards,

Stéphanie Faroux (Météo France)

Dear Stéphanie,

Thank you very much for reporting this issue. In fact, ECMWF has access to Météo-France’s extended network, including the RADOME network (MFR RADOME/Etendu). Please see the ECMWF's newsletter article for details (https://www.ecmwf.int/en/newsletter/176/news/increased-use-surface-observations). However, these stations should not be assessed in WDQMS, as they are not available via GTS/WIS2 and are not registered in OSCAR/Surface. Since they are used in data assimilation, they unintentionally leaked into our monitoring files. The issue was fixed today, so I expect tomorrow’s WDQMS maps should no longer contain these IDs (yellow dots).
Kind regards,

Cristina Prates

Dear Cristina,
Thank you for this clarification!

We just noted something other strange with station PORT-AUX-FRANCAIS (KERGUELEN) 0-20000-0-61998, for the surface land observations.

Each day, DWD, ECMWF et JMA receive 24 data, whereas NCEP receives 164 (surface pressure, 2026-10-02 for example). How is it possible?

Best regards

Australia also has a few stations that NCEP report 164 daily records.
WIGOS-ID: 0-20000-0-94294
WIGOS-ID: 0-20000-0-94610
WIGOS-ID: 0-20000-0-94866
These are international airport locations, and including 48 half-hourly METARs does not add up to 164.

Kind regards
Karl
